PARK(ING) DAY FOR FITNESS 16-17 September

How will we participate in Park(ing) Day for Fitness?

Placemaking Europe, based in Amsterdam in the offices of STIPO, will host a Flagship Park(ing) Day for Fitness on Sept 16th & 17th in Amsterdam Noord adjacent to the Overhoeks Square. We are excited to take back parking spots for a variety of fitness activities - be that silent disco, obstacle course, badminton, petanque, functional fitness and FUN!

Our intervention will take place along Badhuiskade parking, as well as the taxi and charter bus parking along Overhoeksplein, thereby bordering two sides of the square and creating a lasting impression for both days. Throughout the days, we will programme activities at the indicated spots at specific moments, and we will also have more passive options that motivate passersby and participants to engage with the neighbourhood, move and explore.

We are excited to include stakeholders into the interventions, such as -

  • Businesses in the surrounding office buildings
  • Neighbours & residents
  • Local gyms
  • Freelance fitness professionals
  • Neighbourhood middle school
  • Urban actors & placemakers
  • Passersby, such as tourists

Our goal is to connect our neighbours and citizens through the combination of movement and collectively taking back our public spaces- we have a right to the city, let’s #activateourstreets! Also, we want to exemplify to everyone - regardless of identity - that we as an empowered community can create fun, inclusive and safe daily habits to support our overall health through physical activity.

WHAT IS PARK(ING) DAY FOR FITNESS?

Park(ing) Day for Fitness is a two-day event concept that draws on the global Park(ing) Day invented by Rebar Studio in San Francisco, now held worldwide every third Friday in September. Within Park(ing) day, parking spots are transformed into temporary public places, be it parks, social areas, exhibit areas, or anything the organizers want to promote.

Park(ing) Day for Fitness builds on the existing practices and guidelines provided by Rebar, adding an element of a multi-sport day event to offer activities that promote active lifestyles and engage the public.

Park(ing) Day for Fitness events will be held in the third week of September (16-22 September)
